I don’t know the location Of the planets in relation To the stars There are bones in my body That I don’t even know Where they are I can’t say when it all started I don’t know when It will fall apart But I know your face Even in the deepest dark From the island to the ocean From the temple to the cross Somebody’s gain Is somebody’s loss Don’t know what I’d do Without you Hope I never know If Judgment Day is coming I hope it’s moving slow I don’t know how I got here Or if I’m gonna be here long There are so many times When I don’t even know What’s wrong I can’t say a single prayer or psalm I don’t know Heaven from Babylon But I know your voice Even in the softest song From the stone age To the space race From the cradle To the cane Somebody’s loss Is somebody’s gain Don’t know what I’d do Without you Hope I never know If Judgment Day is coming I hope it’s moving slow I can’t go back I won’t go back To what was before I thought I needed a lot of things But I don’t think that anymore And I don’t know what I’d do Without you Hope I never know If Judgment Day is coming I hope it’s moving slow

In the Museum of Natural History I read all about the whale How it learned to stand How it learned to fail Many many years ago It ventured onto land Looking for a better deal Trying for a stronger hand In the end it slipped back in To water through the sand Crying, “Cover me up, tuck me in I want to feel like a child again” Later I went walking Along the Hudson The Rio Grande The Mississippi and I became thirsty And weary and cursing, “Cover me up, tuck me in I want to feel like a child again” And the mouth of the river Opened on up and whispered “Soon enough, soon enough, soon enough” Water to land and back again Water to land and back again

I fled to the shoreline I took refuge in the rocks I watched everything burn From the bridges to the docks I found myself clutching At sea-shaken pebbles Each one much older Than each one of my troubles Lady Madonna of the rocks Won’t you hold me like Jesus? Won’t you carry me with you To the mountains up above? I used to love a woman But that story is so old It always starts so simple It always ends so cold The forest is black now The sky is so white What now is so heavy Someday will be light Lady Madonna of the rocks Won’t you hold me like Jesus? Won’t you carry me with you To the mountains above?

Plates all clatter on the street below Yellow jacket flying in the window Starlings flirt upon antennae stands Placed on clay tiled roofs In southern France Look it doesn’t matter All this talk of the future I want you now I need you now And I can’t have you I went to the river Like so many before me But I didn’t see anything of note Just an empty bottle Inside a broken boat A hook, a swivel and a rusted pole Look it doesn’t matter All this talk of the future I want you now I need you now And I can’t have you The corn is high And the pears are low I won’t be home Until they’re both gone though I know I said I had some things to do But I realize now They were nothing next to you Look it doesn’t matter All this talk of the future I want you now I need you now And I can’t have you

I have been in the hills For a while now Turning over every leaf In the evenings I walk To the old town Place a candle In St. Michael’s for relief There are secrets of course And the question of force But I’m willing no matter the cost Where is my love hiding? Where is my love hiding? Where is my love hiding? Where is my love lost? All these frescoes Are telling me nothing I can’t read the lines in the fields I thought maybe the bones Of a poor man could help But the crypt of Francisco was sealed Where is my love hiding? Where is my love hiding? Where is my love hiding? Where is my love lost? Some things are buried down so deep You don’t even know they’re there Like this love that was And is, I’m sure But I can’t find it anywhere Where is my love hiding? Where is my love hiding? Where is my love hiding? Where is my love lost?

Between the walls of the cave And the walls of the factory Something’s gone missing Something ain’t satisfactory I’ve forgotten how to listen I’ve forgotten how to see I don’t know the trials of my mother I don’t know how to navigate at sea And cold cold water Is crashing at my feet What’s my quality of life What statistic will I be Everybody’s nervous Everybody’s taking speed Medicine to stay up Medicine to go to sleep They charge you here for everything Won’t even bury you for free And this cold cold water Is nipping at my knees Oh the motions of the planets Oh the wobble of the world Oh the axis and the allies Someone’s arm around my girl Sometimes I question everything Sometimes I just sit and curl Up for a while on the floor As the cold cold water Knocks down my door Now I’m measuring the shadows It ain’t looking good I’m well beyond the shallows Where all is understood No one here to save me No one even said they would But that cold cold water Is starting to feel good Oh the motions of the planets Oh the wobble of the world Oh the axis and the allies Someone’s arm around my girl Sometimes I question everything Sometimes I just sit and curl Up for a while on the floor As the cold cold water Knocks down my door Between the walls of the cave And the walls of the factory

300 million years ago The continents collided They are drifting back Together as we speak But darling I have known you now Nearly three weeks And I’m beginning to wonder If our continents will ever meet Full moon in the east Half sun in the west What a space What a big sky between I’ve been spinning in circles My knees are weak Wondering whether the sun And moon will ever meet And now, and then, the rain And afterward The juniper and sage Maybe tomorrow But definitely not today Tracks in the snow Like an earthly constellation They led me down the hill To the creek Crisscrossed by the bank and all Around the cottonwood trees I followed them for days But we never did meet And now, and then, the rain And afterward The juniper and sage Maybe tomorrow But certainly not today

Sarah's Tent 03:50
I gave up Sarah for Lent It was a difficult time But I’m not even Catholic And she is so divine So after four hard days I gave up and I went Out into the desert And into Sarah’s tent Her curtains lined with silver Her bamboo tiled floor Forty days and nights I spent With her and her alone It was a time of healing It was a time of war Everything I ever wanted She gave me so much more Oh the simple mercy And oh those perfect hands Oh the fate that we call fortune That tortures all my plans The canvas fly flew open The sunlight soaring in An army of brave soldiers Offered up their sins I was overtaken I knew not what it meant But my time was over Inside of Sarah’s tent

I saw Moses walking Down the bank of the nile Pounding his staff into the ground He kept that up for a while All of a sudden he opened his mouth And stammered out a little tune Pharaoh and his magicians Stood watching None of them knowing what to do Moses just kept repeating For an hour, for a day, for two If you believe in the flood the flood Paint your doors With blood with blood If you believe in the flood the flood Paint your doors With blood with blood Pharaoh he started laughing Moses he started too God had been laughing for a while Aaron was singing the blues Nine plagues they came Nine plagues they went Many people died And after each and every one Moses said time after time If you believe In the flood the flood Paint your doors With blood with blood If you believe In the flood the flood Paint your doors With blood with blood Well many lambs were slaughtered And roasted in the fire The tenth plague it passed over And smote Pharaoh’s first born child The Hebrews they started walking Down unto the sea They crossed over onto dry land But Pharaoh and his men were buried And as they drowned They heard the sound Of a staff beating on the ground If you believe In the flood the flood Paint your doors With blood with blood If you believe In the flood the flood Paint your doors With blood with blood If you believe In the flood the flood Paint your doors With blood with blood

So many stars in the sky Each one a moment in time Each one leaving behind a little light To see us through the night I been camping out In the mountains walking around Picking berries and fishing for trout Taking a break from the crowds Dreams like water June gettin hotter Keeping cool in the stream It’s a simple life but it’s satisfying So many stars in the sky Each one a moment in time Each one leaving behind a little light To see us through the night
